I was busy preparing for yet another evening with our dear friends, anxiously perfecting every last detail the way I always did for my dinner parties. Sebastian begged me to give him tasks so he could feel helpful, which I did. But every time I gave him a job, I’d quickly have to race behind him to fix it. Like when I told him to set the table. He threw each place setting together in a jumbled mess.

“What does it matter how it is arranged?” he asked, scratching his head as he watched me scramble to put everything in its proper place. “They’ll only move it all around, anyway.”

“Because it looks nice,” I explained. “And it helps people to have some expectation of where to find things. So your guests are more comfortable.”

“Comfortable?” he huffed, unable to wrap his head around the idea of etiquette and entertaining.

“Yes,” I continued, placing my palms flat against the table as I eyed the settings. “Comfortable. Attended to. It’s just another way to show your guests that you care about them. That you’re excited to be in their company.”

He mumbled to himself indistinctly as he picked a few pieces of lint from his shirt and straightened his sleeves. I left him bumbling around as he pretended to know how to tidy up the living room. Everything was almost done, just barely in time, when my phone started buzzing across the countertop.

“That might be Sara,” I called out as I reached for it.

My heart sank with a frown when I saw the name flash across the screen. It was not Sara. I felt some relief when the buzzing rings stopped, but another pang hit almost instantly after with a text notification.

William: Hey gorgeous, I’m in Kahului. When can I see you? Call me. Xoxo

I quickly threw the phone into my purse, hoping I’d soon forget all about it once our company arrived. I glanced up, freezing in Sebastian’s direct line of sight. His eyes were locked onto me expectantly, but I ignored his questioning stare and hurried back into the finishing touches. Grateful for the sound of knocking that came soon after, I opened the front door to usher in our friends.

Sara charged in first as always with her arms flung wide, wrapping around me tightly. “Look at you!” she cried, placing her hand on her hip as she stood back to look me over. “You look fabulous! Even better than the last time I saw you! You’re practically glowing.”

“Thank you,” I beamed. “So do you… but something’s missing…”

“That’s right! The little sea monster of ours isn’t clinging onto me for once!” she laughed.

“We employed what Sara calls a babysitter,” Daegal explained. “But she assures me the young woman will not actually sit on the baby.”

“We’re both kid-free tonight!” Ella chimed in, pulling me into another tight embrace as she came in behind the others.

“Well look who it is,” Gregor scoffed toward Sebastian. “Glad to see you weren’t too busy getting beaten up by shark shifters in an alley to make it tonight’s dinner.
